The Dos & Don'ts of Caring for
Historic & Precious Contents

A two-day course run by John Batty in conjunction with The National Trust for Scotland.

The course is designed to give a basic training to anyone who handles precious objects that require more experienced attention than new office and household contents. No previous experience is required and a certificate of course completion will be granted to all who attend & complete the two days training.

Venue. No.7 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh.

Day One

10am. Morning Coffee with brief outline of the course and its content.

10.30 Start: Welcome by Jacqueline Wright,
Property Manager The Georgian House.

John Batty: Illustrated talk & Introduction on the Care & Protection of Precious Contents, Security, fire & damage

  1. Room environmental conditions.
  2. The effects of damage & how to recognise problems so that they can be reported and dealt with.
  3. How room temperature and humidity affect different materials.
  4. How to deal with damaged objects.

11.30 Short break

  1. Recognising precious objects.
  2. Moving precious objects.

1300-1400 Lunch & Walk about.

  1. Floors & Floor coverings, Oriental carpets and rugs.
  2. Textiles/curtains.
  3. Walls/ wall hangings

15.00 Afternoon tea

  1. Furniture, surface treatments, inlays, stringing & cross banding.
  2. Discussion, questions and answers. Help and advice.

16.00 End of first session



Day Two.

10 am Morning Coffee
10.30am Morning Session Illustrated session on:

  1. Good housekeeping.
  2. Tools & equipment.
  3. Pests, recognition of damage by the following; mice, wood beetle, carpet beetle, moth.
  4. Actions and reporting.

11.30. Short break

  1. Fireplaces/grates, fenders & fire irons.
  2. Marble chimney-pieces/hearths.
  3. Gilt metal, brass, iron, steel & bronze.

1300rs-1400hrs Lunch
Afternoon Session

  1. Leather, books & libraries.
  2. Clocks, long-case and table.
  3. Pictures/mirrors and gilding of wood and metal.
  4. Taxidermy
  5. Arms & Armour       - short break
  6. Silver & Gold
  7. Light fittings, chandeliers & candle light
  8. Final question and answer session and quiz on the two days.
